Scatter symbols, and the slots built around them
The scatter is the only symbol that ignores paylines. It pays where it lands, and in most games it opens the bonus round. How many you need, and how often they turn up, decides more about a slot than almost anything else.

Some games drop paylines entirely and pay for any matching symbols anywhere on the grid.
Trigger frequency
Three scatters sounds easy. In many games it lands roughly once in 200 to 400 spins.
Retriggers
Whether scatters can extend a bonus already in progress often doubles the round's real value.
What to look for
- How many scatters trigger the bonus, and from which reels
- Whether scatters pay a cash prize as well as triggering
- Approximate trigger frequency, often stated in the info panel
- Whether the feature can retrigger, and any cap on it
- Whether extra scatters award additional spins
Why the scatter count matters so much
A slot's entire personality is usually set by how often the bonus triggers. A game needing three scatters across three reels sees the feature regularly and pays modestly when it does. A game needing four or five, or scatters restricted to certain reels, sees it rarely and has to pay far more per trigger to keep the RTP intact — which is exactly what high volatility means in practice.
Scatter-pays games work differently again. With no paylines at all, wins are awarded for any six or eight matching symbols anywhere on the grid, usually with cascades so a single drop can chain. That structure produces frequent small results and rare enormous ones, and it is now the dominant format in new high-volatility releases.
